End day 6 and day 7 in Lisbon

We arrived last night and came to our room.

Later we headed out to dinner across the river.  Took the river ferry across.

Nice view of a bridge which was built by the same company that built the Golden Gate bridge as Lisbon is in an earthquake zone similar to San Francisco.

The jacaranda trees which only bloom for a few weeks are in full bloom.

Today we spent the day in Lisbon visiting numerous sites.

Our first stop was at the site of the monument of discoveries.  On this side are the most important sailing figures of Portugal.  Far left is Henry the Navigator.  6th down is Magellan.  Also figured are de Gama and king Alfonso V.

Also on the site is a mock-up of the plane that made the first flight to Brazil.  It made stops along the way unlike Lindbergh who flew non-stop.

We then visited the Jeronimous Monastery.

The monastery also contains the tomb of Vasco de Gama.

Following that we visited the seaside resort town of Cascais.  Had a nice lunch and walked around the city.  Connie also had ice cream.

This was a scene at the beach where the water temperature rarely gets over 65 degrees which seems to be impacting the tourist business as our guide indicated that it is moving south.  However this doesn’t detract from the beauty of this town.

This picture shows the most western point in Europe.

We then visited the summer palace of the kings, the Queluz Palace.  Not quite as grand as Versailles but up there.

This is the Queen’s bedroom.

This is the throne room.  Notice the Queen’s chair is shorter.

This is the Kings bedroom.

This is a picture from the gardens.

Tonight Connie and I are going into Lisbon center for dinner and hopefully to get some nice pictures.

Adios.
